Sunset & Light trails

This weekend my mate James was able to take time out of his Navel photography course and come see me.

That morning James had been given [yes that's right...given] a new D3 as his kit camera (along with a impressive selection of lenses)

So, Friday night, with the weather staying fairly nice, we decided to have a play with the new camera and take some ‘sunset’ pictures.  I took my D90 with it’s new optech grip along with my new 055XPROB tripod (which was excellent)!

At first we went to a place near Bath/Bristol called Tog Hill, but it’s well known as a dogging spot and with the dodgy looking fellows up there, we decided to keep going on to Marshfield to try and get some church pictures in the setting sun.  Turns out the church was a little hidden from the views over Bristol and so we decided to head back to a lay-by and take some shots across the landscape.

I have to say,  it was funny watching James struggle, it made me feel slightly better to know even accomplished photographers like James struggle with a new camera. Especially when the D3 ISO is so amazing it turned the dusk of the setting sun into what looked like the middle of the day.

So we messed about for a bit. I forgot my remote trigger and my gels, but James had his SB-900 and cto gels to hand for some interesting shots (I’ll link to them when he gets a chance to post them).

But without further ado, here are some of my shots

It was good fun but bloomin’ cold.   As we were already out it seemed a shame to waste an opportunity to take some Light Trail pictures.  Luckily, James was thinking the same thing and as we weren’t too far away from the M4, it was too good an opportunity to miss.  This was my 1st go at this type of thing, and it needs a few more attempts to get it right, but I like the results.

Don’t know if the motorists thought we were Police or jumpers, but the amount of people who ‘honked’ their horns was amazing, maybe they were toggers who knew what we were up to. Any way, ’twas good fun.
