I’ve been looking at buying a Network Attached Storage device for a long time. I finally settled for one of these bad boys. a QNAP TS210 Turbo NAS [full info here].
I bought it as a empty unit and added a Seagate Barracuda Low Power Hard Drive, 2 TB (soooo quiet)
I already run Mcafee Online backup to save all my very important stuff to the cloud, but found I still needed something to store all my photo’s and software backups.
First impressions are very good, I got the whole thing configured and running with 200Gb of backed up data in under an hour. I ‘ve also setup MySQL, PhpMyAdmin and WordPress to run on there (although I did need to change the Apache default user for wordpress to stop the annoying connection details issue)
Using Putty, connect to your NAS, login as admin (must be admin) and issue the command below
chown -R httpdusr /share/Qweb/your-wordpress-install-folder
Itunes streaming seemed failrly straight forward worked straight out the box. On my laptop the NAS library showed up and I was able to play all the songs directly from the NAS.
Setting up my router to allow acces to the NAS from the internet was pretty staright forward too. I’ll have to spend a little more time tying it down to make it more secure but for the moment with no sensitive data on there I am not too worried.
There is plenty more to play with on this device and the next challenge (although I doubt it’s going to be hard) is to get my xbox streaming video from it..
More to come
